Assurance of Salvation
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.
1 John 5:13
If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7
(Darkness is Sin, Light is truth. God’s word is truth. Walking in the light is walking according to God’s word.)
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
(Confessing our sins is more than mere acknowledgment, it is repenting for our sins. Turning away from sin and back to God.)
And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 1 John 2:3
(A full list of Jesus’s commandments can be found here, but the greatest commandment is summed up by Jesus this way; “The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12: 28-31)
Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. 1 John 2:6
(Jesus walked in close fellowship with God, in perfect love towards men. The Apostle Pauls life gives us an example of how our lives should look. “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1)
Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. 1 John 2:10
(Love paves the way for acceptance and forgiveness. “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8)
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 1 John 2:15
Our hearts, our minds, our affections and longings should be of Godly things, heavenly things and this should be evident in how we live. Being in the world and of the world speaks to giving in to or loving the lusts of the flesh and love for things that are perishing, not of eternal value. John 17:14
No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 1 John 2:23
Boldly proclaim Jesus Christ is Lord, without hesitation. “Everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my father who is in heaven.” Matthew 10:32-33
If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him. 1 John 2:29
We practice righteousness by imitating Jesus in our daily life’s. Upholding His commandments, loving as He loved and turning from sin.
No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 1 John 3:6
We all sin, but sorrow over our sin should drive you to repentance. You should not love your sin and make excuses for it. Neither should you make sin a lifestyle.
Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 1 John 4:15
This is a confession that Jesus is Lord, the messiah and your individual need to be saved. You can see ROAD TO SALVATION to understand our need for a savior. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13
